In 1883 Howard and Billings were divided into several counties, three of which, Dunn, Billings, and Villard, occupied the territory now found in Golden Valley. (7) In 1879 Billings County was created just south of Howard County. Howard County, containing land found at present in Golden Valley County, was bounded on the west by the Territorial boundary on the south by the tenth standard parallel on the east by the thirteenth guide meridian on the north by the Missouri River. (6)īy the laws of 1872-73 four counties were created south and west of the Missouri River. (5) This county was eliminated from Dakota in 1868 with the creation of Wyoming Territory with its eastern boundary of twenty-seven degrees west from Washington. In the area west of the Missouri River the first county to be created was Laramie, including all the territory west of the one hundred and fourth meridian. (3) Lydia Richards is called "The Mother of Beach" because she was the first to file a homestead on land now within the City of Beach. The mail was carried by pony express twice a month from the Little Missouri River. Lang opened a store and served as postmaster. The Gregory (2) Lang family came to Yule, where Mr. The Henry Gilbert family of Ontario, Canada, located at Sentinel Butte. The first permanent families in Golden Valley County arrived in 18. Parts of this old trail may still be seen.
Custer, in his fight against the Sioux Indians, followed the old Sully Trail as far as Sentinel Butte where he turned south and covered a portion of the county. Stanley of the Seventh Cavalry escorted Thomas Rosser in his second survey. They followed the old Sully Trail as far as Sentinel Butte and then passed due west. Major Whistler escorted Thomas Rosser through the western portion of North Dakota. The first was known as the Whistler Expedition of 1871. The railway surveys brought two expeditions through the county. In 1864 General Sully in his campaign against the Sioux Indians passed through what is now Golden Valley County from east to west at approximately its center near the present village of Sentinel Butte.
